This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Polyxena

Polyxena was a 5,308 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1896 by J. L. Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Rickmers Reismuhlen, Rhederei & Schiffbau AG as Maria Rickmers. At the time of her loss she was owned by Ocean Steam Ship Co. Ltd. (on behalf of the British Government), named Polyxena and managed by A. Holt & Co. She was sunk on 12 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-95 at position 51° 06' N, 11° 05' W - approximately 57 nautical miles West of Fastnet. She was en route from Austalia to Queenstown with a cargo of wheat.

A report in the Melbourne Argus [78] on Saturday 29 June says that although the ship sank in shallow waters, only one engineer was rescued. I have been unable to find any information about J.B. Lonie in the CWGC database.

Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie was a 7,236 GRT steam cargo ship (ref) completed in 1912 by Hawthorne Leslie for Anglo-Australasian Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and from 1914 owned by Commonwealth & Dominion Line Ltd. I can find no information about an incident in 1915 and in fact the ship survived WW1 and was ultimately torpedoed in WW2 - by which time she had been renamed Stangrant. Whatever the cause of Mr.Pickard losing his life, it has been classified as a war loss rather than an on-board accident.

I do not have useable images of the panel for this vessel at present but will add them at a future date. Herbert Somerton was a member of the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve. Sailors from Newfoundland and Labrador served in almost every flotilla and squadron of the Royal Navy during the First World War. They fought in the waters off Turkey, France, and the United Kingdom. They patrolled the North Sea, they guarded North America's coastlines, and they engaged in combat with Germany's U-boats and battleships.
