Powhatan

Powhatan was a 6,117 GRT steam tanker completed in 1898 by Sir James Laing for Anglo-American Oil as Tuscarora. At the time of her loss she was owned by Standard Transportation Co. Ltd. and renamed Powhatan. She was sunk on 6 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-66 at position 59° 32' N, 06° 30' W - approximately 25 nautical miles North by West of North Rona, Outer Hebrides. She was en route from Sabine to Kirkwall with a cargo of fuel oil.

At the time of her loss she was owned by Alexander Minty and registered in Banff as BF.696. She was sunk on 7 January 1918 by gunfire from German submarine U-91 at position 57° 13' N, 06° 28' W - approximately 3 nautical miles East of Loch Eynort, Skye.


The Date of Death recorded by the CWGC for Mr Watt is a week later than this incident. I presume his death was caused by the same incident but that he was rescued after the attack and died later.
