This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Rappahannock

Rappahannock was a 3,884 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1893 by A. Stephen & Sons for Chesapeake & Ohio. At the time of her loss she was owned by Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 26 October 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-69 approximately 70 nautical miles off the Scilly Islands. She was en route from Halifax to London.

There were no survivors

The German government issued a statement to the effect that this vessel had been forced to stop by the submarine and the crew were given ample time to leave the vessel in lifeboats that were in good condition and equipped with sails and provisions. They also said that there were favourable winds which should have taken them to the Scilly Islands. Whether this is true or not is a matter of conjecture as in the event none of the crew made it ashore alive.

Rebono

Rebono was a 175 GRT steam trawler completed in 1912 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell for an unconfirmed owner and registered at Grimsby as GY.731. She sank on 23 September 1914 after striking a mine approximately 25 nautical miles East by North of the Spurn Light Ship. At the time she was sunk, she was returning to Grimsby from a fishing trip in the North Sea. The mine was probably laid by German minelayer Nautilus.

Although I am unable to confirm this from official records, it is likely that this vessel was owned by George F. Sleight of Grimsby as this company had several similar vessels from the same supplier and with a similar pattern of naming.
