Losses in WW1

Romford was a 3,035 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by Ropner & Son for Britain Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Watts, Watts & Co. She sank on 10 February 1918 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-67 at position 36° 54' N, 10° 24' E - approximately 2.5 nautical miles East of Cape Carthage. She was en route from Barry and Tunis to Bizerta with a cargo of phosphates.

Romny was a 1,024 GRT cargo ship completed in 1913 by Helsingørs Jernskibsvft. & Maskinbyg of Helsingør for Det Forenede D/S A/S of Copenhagen. From 1918 she was under the control of the British Government and managed by Lambert Bros. Ltd. She was sunk on 26 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-74 approximately 10 nautical miles North-North-East of Cape Barfleur. She was en route frolm Rouen to Swansea in ballast.

Rosalie was a 4,237 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1915 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Seville & United Kingdom Carrying Co. Ltd. and managed by J. Cory & Sons Ltd. She was sunk on 20 February 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-39 at position 37° 01' N, 05° 54' E - approximately 8 nautical miles East of Djidjelli, Algeria. She was en route from New York to Salonica with a cargo of munitions and oats.

Rosalind was a 6,535 GRT steam tanker completed in 1913 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd. for Oil Tank Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by C. T. Bowring & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 6 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-86 at position 51° 39' N, 14° 20' W - approximately 180 nautical miles West-North-West of Fastnet. She was en route from Port Arthur and Norfolk to Queenstown carrying oil.

Rosario was a 1,821 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1900 by Blyth Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for Orders & Handford Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Orders & Handford. She was sunk on 19 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-55 South-West of Ireland. She was en route from Huelva to Troon with a cargo of ore.

Rosebank was a 3,836 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Pyman Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by G. Pyman & Co. She was sunk on 31 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-73 at position 34° 09' N, 19° 35' E - approximately 120 nautical miles North of Benghazi. She was en route from Port Said to Malta.

Rosedale was a 169 GRT steam trawler completed in 1898 by Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. for The Sovereign Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and registered in Grimsby as GY.971. She departed Grimsby on 15 October 1915 and was not seen again.

Rosella was a 243 GRT steam trawler completed in 1907 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell Ltd. for Pelham Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. At the time of her loss she was owned by Thomas Baskcomb and registered at Grimsby as GY.272. She sank on 29 October 1914 after striking a mine approximately 45 nautical miles South-East of Southwold.

Rota was a 2,171 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1915 by Dunlop, Bremner & Co. Ltd. for A/S Det Dansk-Russiske D/S of Denmark. From 1917 she was in the hands of the British Government and managed by Furness, Withy & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 22 July 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 approximately 7 nautical miles East by South of Berry Head. She was en route from Benisaf to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore.

Rotorua was a 11,130 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship (ref) completed in 1910 by William Denny & Bros. for New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 22 March 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-17 at position 50° 17' N, 03° 07' W. She was en route from Wellington to London with a general cargo.
