This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Royal Edward

Royal Edward was a 11,117 GRT steam passenger ship completed in 1908 by Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. for Canadian Northern Steamships Ltd. She was sunk on 13 August 1915 date by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-14 at position 36° 31' N, 25° 51' W - approximately 6 nautical miles West of Kandeliusa, Aegean Sea. She was en route from Avonmouth and Alexandria to Muros with troops. Overall 866 people lost their lives in this attack.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

The liner Royal Edward, Cdr. P. M. Wotton, R.N.R., was employed in carrying troops to Gallipoli in 1915. During this campaign the Germans transported across Europe to the Adriatic a number of small submarines in sections. These vessels were destined to play an important part in the Mediterranean war and caused great havoc among allied shipping. On August 13th, 1915, the U-15, Lt. von Heimburg sighted the Royal Edward, six miles W. of Kandeliusa Island and at once attacked her, getting home a torpedo full on her stern.

The transport sank in a very short time with heavy loss of life. According to German accounts, which were fully borne out by the facts, no attempt was made to interfere with the hospital ship Soudan which arrived on the scene soon after, accompanied by two French destroyers and some trawlers. These ships picked up fewer than 500 survivors out of 1,366 troops and 220 crew. Cdr. Wotton went down with the vessel.
