Sallagh was a 325 GRT compound-engined cargo ship completed in 1916 by A. Jeffrey & Co. for Howden Bros. She was intercepted on 10 February 1917 by German submarine UC-65 off Bardsey Island and sunk by explosive charges and gunfire.

Salmo

Salmo was a 1,721 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1900 by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. for Ellerman's Wilson Line Ltd. She was sunk on 7 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-60 at position 52° 30' N, 14° 40' W - approximately 210 nautical miles North-West of Fastnet. She was en route from Oporto to Liverpool with a general cargo. It is not known why there is a variances in the Dates of Death of the crew members recorded in the CWGC database.

Salvia was a 207 GRT steam trawler completed in 1900 by Schofield Hagerup & Doughty Ltd. for The North Eastern Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and registered at Grimsby as GY.1164. She was reported missing on 29 September 1914 and not seen again.

Samoset

Samoset was a 5,251 GRT steam tanker completed in 1909 by Napier & Miller Ltd for Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd. as Cadillac. From 1916 she was owned by Standard Transportation Co. Ltd. and renamed Samoset. She was sunk on 20 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-33 approximately 50 nautical miles North by East of Port Said. She was en route from Port Said to Brindisi with a cargo of fuel oil.

San Dunstano

San Dunstano was a 6,220 GRT steam tanker completed in 1912 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd. for Eagle Oil Transport Co. Ltd. She was damaged on 5 September 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-52 approximately 40 nautical miles North of Ushant. She was en route from Puerto Mexico to London with a cargo of oil. The vessel was towed into Falmouth by the tug Sun 2 and repaired. She survived the war and was ultimately wrecked in 1929 at the entrance to the Tampico River.

San Melito was a 10,160 GRT steam tanker completed in 1914 by Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd. for Eagle Oil Transport Co. Ltd. She was damaged on 21 August 1915 by gunfire from German submarine U-38 approximately 70 nautical miles South-West of The Lizard. She was en route from London to Mexico. After repair she continued in service until being broken up in 1954.

She was sunk on 12 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-48 at position 52° 25' N, 11° 42' W - approximately 64 nautical miles North-West by West of The Skelligs. She was en route from Puerto Mexico to Queenstown with a cargo of fuel oil.

San Rito was a 3,310 GRT steam cargo ship (ref) completed in 1916 by Workman, Clark & Co., Ltd. for themselves. She was sunk on 15 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-37 at position 37° 51' N, 25° 33' E - approximately 23 nautical miles South-West of Cape Mastiko, Khios Island. She was en route from Salonica to Port Said in ballast.

She was sunk on 1 May 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-81 at position 51° 33' N, 13° 38' W - approximately 180 nautical miles North-West by West of Fastnet. She was en route from Puerto Mexico to London with a cargo of naptha.

San Zeferino

San Zeferino was a 6,430 GRT steam tanker completed in 1914 by Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd. for Eagle Oil Transport Co. Ltd. She was damaged due to enemy action on two occasions as below but survived the war and was finally broken up in 1951.

  • 18 September 1915: She was damaged by a mine laid by German submarine UC-6 approximately 2 nautical miles North-North-West of the South Goodwin Light Vessel. She was en route frolm Puerto Mexico to Sheerness with a cargo of fuel oil. Two seamen lost their lives in this attack.
  • 26 September 1917: She was damaged by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-33 in St. George's Channel. She was en route from Avonmouth to Tampico in ballast. Three seamen lost their lives in this attack.
