Losses in WW1

I have been unable to identify a vessel named Sanda that was damaged on sunk on or around 2 October - the Date of Death recorded by the CWGC for Mr. McMurtrie - so am unable to shed any light on what happened to him.

Sandhurst was a 3,027 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1897 by Blyth Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for Russell Huskie & Co. as Craigneuk. From 1917 she was owned by Britain Steamship Co. Ltd., renamed Sandhurst, and managed by Watts, Watts & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 6 May 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-72 at position 54° 58' N, 05° 25' W - approximately 6 nautical miles North-West by West of Corsewall Point. She was en route from Bilbao to Ardrossan with a cargo of iron ore.

Sandsend was a 3,814 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1899 by W. Gray & Co. Ltd. for Pyman Stemship Co. Ltd. and managed by G. Pyman & Co. She was sunk on 16 September 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-48 approximately 6 nautical miles South-East by East of Mine Head, Ireland. She was en route from Barry to Queenstown with coal and a general cargo.

Santa Amalia was a 4,284 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by Russell & Co. for Astral Shipping Co. Ltd. as Drumlanrig. She was refitted in 1915 as a part tanker, sold to Eagle Oil Transport Co. Ltd. and renamed Santa Amalia. She was sunk on 28 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-19 at position 55° 36' N, 07° 38' W - approximately 30 nautical miles North by East of Main Head. She was en route from Manchester to Puerto Mexico in ballast.

Sanwen was a 3,689 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1915 by J. Priestman & Co. for O.& W. Williams Co. as Devian. From 1917 she was owned by W. & C. T. Jones Steamship Co. Ltd., renamed Sanwen, and managed by W. & C. T. Jones. She was sunk on 29 September 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-32 at position 42° 52' N, 04° 15' E - approximately 50 nautical miles East by North of Cape Bear. She was en route from the Clyde to Naples with a cargo of coal and coke.

Sapele was a 3,152 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Palmer's Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd. for British & African Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by Elder, Dempster & Co. She was sunk on 26 October 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-104 at position 55° 56' N, 11° 00' W - approximately 100 nautical miles North-West of Tory Island. She was en route from Liverpool to Sierra Leone with a general cargo.

Sapphire was a 298 GRT steam trawler completed in 1913 by Cochrane & Sons Shipbuilders Ltd. for Kingston Steam Trawling Co. Ltd. and registered at Hull as H.675. She sank on 28 February 1915 (or 1 March) after striking a mine laid by German cruiser Kolberg off Filey. She was returning to her home port from Iceland.

Savan was a 4,264 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1913 by J. Readhead & Sons Ltd. for Scrutton, Sons & Co. She was damaged on 12 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-71 approximately 5.5 nautical miles North by East of Anvil Point. She was en route from London to the West Indies in ballast. After repair she had a long life for multiple owners and with multiple names. As Santa Paola she was scuttled as a blockship at Porti di Lido, Venice but was subsequently salvaged and broken up.

Savona was a 1,213 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1881 by R. Steele & Co. for Leith, Hull & Hamburg Steam Packet Co. Ltd. and managed by J. Currie & Co. She sank on 1 September 1915 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-7 approximately 0.5 nautical miles from the Shipwash Light Vessel. She was en route from Oran to Leith with a cargo of esparto and lead.

Saxon was a 1,595 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1881 by T. Turnbull & Son for Robinson & Rowland. At the time of her loss she was owned by Entente Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Leopold Walford (London), Ltd. She was sunk on 7 May 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-105 approximately 83 nautical miles East-South-East of Fair Isle. She was en route from Odde to Leith with a cargo of carbide.

Saxon Briton was a 1,337 GRT compound-engined cargo ship completed in 1883 by Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Co. for Gibbs & Lee. At the time of her loss she was owned by Kerse Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Walker & Bain. She was sunk on 6 February 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-55 at position 50° 13' N, 05° 35' W. She was en route from Portishead to Calais with a cargo of petrol.
