She was sunk on 11 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-77 at position 48° 34' N, 04° 55' W - approximately 5 nautical miles North-West of Le Four Lighthouse, Ushant. She was en route from Bilbao to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore.

  • 2 September 1915: She was seriously damaged in an attack by German submarine UB-14 off Strati Island. She was en route from Alexandria to Mudros. Ten seamen lost their lives in this attack.
  • 4 June 1917: She was sunk by torpedo fired by German submarine U-70 at position 56° 10' N, 12° 14' W - approximately 140 nautical miles North-West by West of Tory Island. She was en route from Liverpool to Philadelphia with a general cargo. Four seamen lost their lives in this attack

Sowwell was a 3,771 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1900 by W. Gray & Co., Ltd. for Mitre Steamship Co. Ltd. as Kenley. At the time of her loss she was owned by Sowwell Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Galbraith, Pembroke & Co. She was sunk on 19 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-35 approximately 170 nautical miles West by South of Gibraltar. She was en route from Sagunto to Glasgow with a cargo of iron ore.
