This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Tangistan

Tangistan was a 3,738 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1906 by William Gray & Co. Ltd. for Anglo-Algerian Steamship Co. (1896) Ltd. From 1913 she was owned by Strick Line Ltd. She sank on 9 March 1915 as the result of a large explosion approximately 9 nautical miles North of Flamborough Head which is believed to have been caused by her striking a mine. She was en route from Benisaf to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore. There was just one survivor.

I was contacted in December 2020 by Janet Neilsen, the great granddaughter of John Brustad Neilsen who lost his life. She has kindly provided a press cutting and told me:

On the 100th anniversary of the sinking I went to Flamborough Head and threw a poppy wreath into the sea. Even his grandchildren never met him as they were all born after he died. He left a widow and 8 children. In my research I discovered that he never became a British citizen, but at the time he married, the wife automatically took her husband’s nationality. So she and the children could have been imprisoned or deported to Norway! My great grandmother was born in Pembrokeshire. My great grandmother had to sign an affidavit to reclaim her British citizenship and I have that document. I have since researched his life and visited the house where he was born on the island of Ytteroy, Norway.
