The Merchant Navy Memorial

In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Theban

Theban was a 202 GRT steam trawler completed in 1913 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell for Thomas Robinson and registered at Grimsby as GY.937. She left Grimsby on a fishing trip on 8 November 1919. On 14 November 1919 the trawler Phoebe was near another trawler and fishing about 65 nautical miles from the Humber when there was a loud explosion and flames engulfed this second vessel. Only a few traces of the vessel remained. It was later concluded that the trawler that had been destroyed was the Theban as no others were reported as missing.

Therese Heymann

Therese Heymann was a 2,393 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1890 by Ropner & Sons Ltd. for Mcnabb, Rougier & Co. She left the Tyne on 25 December 1914 and was not seen again. It is believed that she probably struck a mine off Filey.

Thetis

Thetis was a 33 GRT sailing vessel (ketch) completed in 1872 in Cowes for Thomas W. Ratsey. By 1915 she was owned by Lewis Hutton & Sims Ltd, of Southampton. I can find no information about how these two members of the Weadock family lost their lives but, given the size of the vessel, they are likely to be the entire crew.

Unfortunately, the location of this panel makes it virtually impossible to get a decent image.

Thirlby was a 2,009 steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by Ropner & Son for Sir R. Ropner & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 2 July 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-31 at position 51° 39' N, 12° 52' W - approximately 122 nautical miles North-West by West of Fastnet. She was en route from Sevilla to Garston with a cargo of copper and copper ore.

She was sunk on 18 June 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-82 at position 52° 17' N, 15° 18' W - approximately 218 nautical miles North-West by West of Fastnet. She was en route from Iquique via Newport News to Newport with a cargo of nitrate.

She sank on 28 February 1916 after striking a mine laid by German submarine UC-3 at position 52° 04' N, 01° 43' E - approximately 2 nautical miles North-East of the Shipwash Light Vessel. She was en route from Marbella to West Hartlepool with a cargo of iron ore.

She was sunk on 27 March 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-69 at position 47° 31' N, 03° 17' W - approximately 12 nautical miles North of Belle Ile. She was en route from Bilbao to Ardrossan with a cargo of iron ore.

At the time of her loss she was owned by Hellyer's Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 11 May 1915 by a German torpedo boatsubmarine North-West of Dogger Bank.
