Vessels Lost in WW1: Tuscania to Umballa

This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Tuscania

Tuscania was a 14,348 GRT steam passenger/cargo ship completed in 1915 by A. Stephen & Sons Ltd. for Anchor Line and managed by Henderson Bros. Ltd. She was sunk on 5 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-77 at position 55° 37' N, 06° 26' W - approximately 7 nautical miles North of Rathlin Island. She was en route from New York to London carrying U.S. Troops and a general cargo.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

The Anchor liner Tuscania, Capt. P. McLean, O.B.E. was taken over as a government transport in the First World War. At the time of her loss she was carrying 2,235 persons of who 113 officers and 1,917 other ranks belonged to the United States Army, the remainder consisting of six passengers and two naval ratings besides crew. On the night of February 5th 1918 when seven miles north of Rathlin Island the Tuscania was torpedoed by a German submarine and sank with the loss of 166 lives.
