This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Vanellus

Vanellus was a 1,797 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson, Ltd. for Cork Steamship Co. Ltd. She sank on 1 October 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-26 approximately 0.5 nautical miles West-South-West of the Whistle Buoy, Le Havre Roads. She was en route from Portishead to Rouen with a cargo of oil.

Vanguard

Vanguard was a 142 GRT sailing vessel (fishing vessel). She was probably built by J.Taylor in 1885 and owned by Smith Bros. of Burnham-on-Crouch according to Uboat.net - [2] - but there is a discrepancy between the date of loss recorded there (16 November 1916) and the date recorded by the CWCG. Assuming this is correct, She was stopped and sunk by explosive charges on 16 November 1916 by German submarine UB-40 at position 49° 53' N, 00° 13' E - approximately 18 nautical miles North-West by North of Cape d'Antifer. She was en route from Honfleur to London in ballast.

Vanilla

Vanilla was a 158 GRT steam trawler completed in 1897 by Cochrane & Cooper for Arctic Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. At the time of her loss she was owned by Savoy Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and registered at Grimsby as GY.202. Some reports say she was torpedoed by a submarine but it is much more likely that she sank after striking a mine laid by German cruisers Stralsund and Strassburg. She was lost approximately 3 nautical miles South-West of the Swarte Bank.
