Losses in WW1

Wessex was a 171 GRT steam trawler completed in 1902 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell for East Anglia Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and registered at Grimsby as GY.1231. She was posted as missing on 5 November 1914 having left for the North Sea fishing grounds and was not seen again.

West Wales was a 4,331 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1912 by Blyth Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for West Wales Steamship Co. Ltd. and managed by Gibbs & Co. She was sunk on 21 January 1918 by torpedo fired by Austrian submarine U-28 at position 34° 00' N, 16° 50' E - approximately 140 nautical miles South-East by South of Malta. She was en route from Barry to Alexandria with a cargo of coal.

Westergate was a 1,742 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1881 by Short Bros. for Mead Son & Hussey. From 1915 she was owned by Franco-British Steamship Co. and managed by Olivier & Co. She was sunk on 21 April 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-80 approximately 22 nautical miles East by South of Start Point. She was en route from Hartlepool to Carthagena.

Western Coast was a 1,394 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1916 by Dublin Dockyard Co. Ltd. for Coast Lines Ltd. She was sunk on 17 November 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 at position 50° 07' N, 04° 30' W - approximately 10 nautical miles West-South-West of the Eddystone Lighthouse. She was en route from Portsmouth to Barry Roads in ballast.

Westminster was a 4,342 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd. for Westminster Shipping Co. She was sunk on 14 December 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-43 at position 35° 35' N, 18° 23' E - approximately 196 nautical miles East by South of Malta. She was en route from Torre Anunnziata to Aden in ballast.

Westmoor was a 4,329 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1911 by J. Readhead & Sons Ltd. for Moor Line Ltd. and managed by W. Runciman & Co. She was sunk on 1 July 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-91 at position 34° 10' N, 11° 47' W - approximately 210 nautical miles North-West by West of Casablanca. She was en route from Gibraltar to Buenos Aires in ballast.

Westmoreland was a 9,512 GRT steam cargo ship (ref) completed in 1917 by D. & W. Henderson & Co. Ltd. for ZZZ. She was damaged on 6 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-57 at position 54° 20' N, 03° 30' W - off the Isle of Man. She was en route from Wellington and Halifax to Liverpool with a cargo of frozen meat. She survived the war and was ultimately sunk on 1 June 1942 by gunfire from German submarine U-556.

Wheatflower was a 188 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1895 by South Hylton Shipbuilding and Repair Co. Ltd. for Spillers Steamship Co. She was stopped on 19 February 1918 by German submarine U-86 at position 52° 09' N, 05° 45' W - approximately 10 nautical miles North-West by North of Tuskar, then sunk by gunfire. She was en route from Cardiff to Dublin with a cargo of coal.

Whitehall was a 3,158 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by Richardson, Duck & Co. for Whitehall Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. and managed by Blow Richards & Co. She was sunk on 29 July 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-95 at position 50° 05' N, 16° 28' W - approximately 270 nautical miles West by North of Fastnet. She was en route from Montreal to Ipswich with a cargo of wheat and flour.

Whitgift was a 4,397 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Northumberland Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for Whitgift Steamship Co. Ltd. From 1915 she was owned by Westminster Shipping Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 20 April 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-67 at position 47° 51' N, 06° 10' W - South-West of Ushant. She was en route from Almeria to the Tyne with a cargo of ore. There was only one survivor of the attack - a Japanese seaman who was taken prisoner by the Germans.
