Wessex

Wessex was a 171 GRT steam trawler completed in 1902 by Cook, Welton & Gemmell for East Anglia Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and registered at Grimsby as GY.1231. She was posted as missing on 5 November 1914 having left for the North Sea fishing grounds and was not seen again.

She was sunk on 21 January 1918 by torpedo fired by Austrian submarine U-28 at position 34° 00' N, 16° 50' E - approximately 140 nautical miles South-East by South of Malta. She was en route from Barry to Alexandria with a cargo of coal.

She was sunk on 17 November 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-40 at position 50° 07' N, 04° 30' W - approximately 10 nautical miles West-South-West of the Eddystone Lighthouse. She was en route from Portsmouth to Barry Roads in ballast.

She was damaged on 6 February 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine UB-57 at position 54° 20' N, 03° 30' W - off the Isle of Man. She was en route from Wellington and Halifax to Liverpool with a cargo of frozen meat. She survived the war and was ultimately sunk on 1 June 1942 by gunfire from German submarine U-556.

She was sunk on 20 April 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-67 at position 47° 51' N, 06° 10' W - South-West of Ushant. She was en route from Almeria to the Tyne with a cargo of ore. There was only one survivor of the attack - a Japanese seaman who was taken prisoner by the Germans.
