Losses in WW1

Wychwood was a 1,985 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1907 by Osbourne, Graham & Co. for W. France, Fenwick & Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 28 March 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-65 at position 52° 40' N, 05° 55' W - approximately 4 nautical miles South-South-West of the South Arklow Light Vessel. She was en route from Barry to Scapa Flow with a cargo of coal.

Wyndhurst was a 570 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1917 by J. Lewis & Sons Ltd. for Cleeves Western Valleys Anthracite Collieries, Ltd. and managed by T. D. John. She was sunk on 6 December 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-71 at position 50° 05' N, 01° 18' W - approximately 30 nautical miles South of St. Catherine's Point. She was en route from Penarth to Rouen with a cargo of coal.

Yarmouth was a 162 GRT steam trawler completed in 1897 by Mackie & Thomson for Hagerup, Doughty & Co. Ltd. and registered at Grimsby as GY.334. At the time of her loss she was owned by Consolidated Steam Fishing and Ice Co. (Grimsby) Ltd. She went missing and was not seen again after 8 November 1915.

There were no survivors

Yeovil was a 164 GRT steam trawler completed in 1898 by Irvine Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd. for Hagerup, Doughty & Co. Ltd. and registered at Grimsby as GY.575. At the time of her loss she was owned by Consolidated Steam Fishing & Ice Co. Ltd. She was captured on 21 April 1917 by German submarine UC-33 and scuttled with explosive charges approximately 35 nautical miles North-North-West of Foula Island.

Yochow was a 2,127 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Scott & Co. for China Navigation Co. Ltd. She was sunk on 20 March 1918 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-33 approximately 54 nautical miles North by East of Port Said.

Yola was a 3,504 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1898 by Sunderland Shipbuilding Co. for Elder, Dempster & Co. Ltd. She departed New York on 26 January 1917 bound for London and was reported missing and not seen again. According to uboat.net, Yola was torpedoed by German submarine U 55 on 7 February 1917 at location 49° 34'N, 7° 12'W.

There were no survivors

Young Bert was a 47 GRT trawler completed in 1904 in Brixham for William Robbens & Sons Ltd. and registered at Lowestoft as LT.454. She was stopped and scuttled on 2 August 1917 by German submarine UC-63 off The Humber. The crew took to their lifeboat but were not seen again.

Yzer was a 3,001 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1904 by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co. Ltd. for Cuban Steamship Co. Ltd. as Cayo Manzanillo. From 1916 she was owned by Brys & Gylsen, Ltd. She was sunk on 20 July 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-39 at position 37° 12' N, 02° 20' E - approximately 56 nautical miles North-West by North of Algiers. She was en route from Cette to Gibraltar in ballast.

Zambesi was a 3,727 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1901 by Bartram & Sons for Turner, Brightman & Co. She was sunk on 1 April 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-63 at position 31° 26' N, 29° 49' E - approximately 15 nautical miles North by West of Alexandria. She was en route from the Tyne to Port Said with a cargo of coal.

Zamora was a 3,602 GRT steam cargo ship completed in 1905 by J. L. Thompson & Sons Ltd. for Turner, Brightman & Co. She was damaged on 6 August 1917 by torpedo fired by German submarine UC-63 approximately 2 nautical miles North-West of the Inner Dowsing Light Vessel. She was en route from Arkangel to an unknown destination with a cargo of timber. She survived a further attack on 26 July 1918 in the Atlantic and after three changes of name and ownership was eventually broken up in 1959.
