This page includes basic information about the ships and how they were lost, a photo of the relevant panel(s) of the Tower Hill Memorial and information about those that lost their lives extracted from the CWGC database. In the table I have included information about those who served on the ships but who had a normal burial as this seems appropriate to me. In some cases further family information about the individuals may be available on the CWGC website [7].

Taylor Ltd. She was sunk on 7 April 1915 by torpedo fired by a German submarine according to nearby ships though I have not found any information as to which submarine this may have been. Zarina

Zebrina

Zebrina was a 189 GRT three-masted sailing barge completed in 1873 at Whitstable. She left Falmouth on 15 October 1917 bound for Saint-Brieuc with a cargo of coal. On 17 October the vessel was discovered ashore at Rozel Point, South of Cherbourg. Her cargo and sails were intact but there was no sign of her crew and nothing further was heard of them. There has been a great deal of speculation as to what happened to her but no firm evidence. One suggestion is that the crew were taken by a submarine intending to sink her but sunk herself. Another is that she was a "Q-ship". The vessel was put back into service.

Zent

Zent was a 3,890 GRT steam cargo ship (ref) completed in 1905 by Workman, Clark & Co. Ltd. for Elders & Fyffes Ltd. She was sunk on 5 April 1916 by torpedo fired by German submarine U-66 approximately 28 nautical miles West by South of Fastnet. She was en route from Garston to Santa Maria in ballast.

According to Charles Hocking [35]:

The steamship Zent, Captain Martin, on a voyage from Garston to Santa Maria was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine on April 5th 1916 28 miles West by South of Fastnet. The vessel was struck twice on the starboard side, the first torpedo tearing away part of her hull and the second exploding in the engine room killing two engineers. The number on board was 56 fo whom 49 lost their lives either by the explosion of the torpedoes or by the capsizing of the boats. The nine survivors included Capt. Martin, no other officers being saved. Great devotion to duy was exhibited by the wireless officer Mr. Proughton who remained at his post sending out S.O.S. calls and went down with the ship.
