Bergesen Line

History

The Bergesen shipping business was first started in Stavanger in Norway in the 19th Century by Berge Bergesen in Stavanger. The Bergesen company was founded in 1935 by his great-grandson Sigval Bergesen and they purchased their first tanker at that time. By 1950 the company had 4 tankers and by 1955 it had 7. In the mid-1960s Bergesen entered the dry bulk cargo trade.

The company became public in 1978 - soon after the retirement of its founder. It purchased 6 gas transporters originally ordered by Fearlney and Eger but who had gone out of business.

Bergesen merged with Havtor ASA, in 1996 forming a group with over 100 vessels.

In 2003, the company became a fully-owned subsidiary of World-Wide Shipping.

The company appears to have had a naming convention of starting ships names with Berge - at least this is true of all the ships represented in this collection.
