Service History Information
The vessel was in Huskisson Dock Liverpool and loaded with munitions during an air raid on 3 May 1941. A fire in the dock sheds spread and the ship
caught fire. Attempts to put the fire out failed and she blew up on 4 May 1941 destroying Huskisson No. 2 dock. Although the Malakand explosion is
often attributed to a burning barrage balloon, the fire the balloon started was put out before it could affect the ship. Details of those that lost their
lives can be found on the Benjidog Tower Hill website
HERE.

Service History Information
Shortened in 1935. Sunk after striking a mine on 24 November 1939 approximately 1.5 miles from Spurn lighthouse on a bearing of 288°.
She was en route from Calcutta to Hull with a cargo of manganese ore, gunnies and general cargo. It is believed that mines had been laid by
a German aircraft ween in the area around 20 November. Mangalore was preparing to join a convoy and her anchor detonated a mine. The crew were
rescued by pilot cutter W. Massey and the launch Ferryman. There were minor injuries to some of the Asian crew.
Note: I have been unable to work out the meaning of 'gunnies' being part of the cargo. This was taken from the entry on the Miramar Ship
Index but I don't know the original source. It could be a typo somewhere along the line. There is an Australian RAAF usage referring to armourers or aircraft
technicians that load or maintain aircraft ordinance but this seems unlikely. There is also a US usage meaning coarse sacking made of jute fibre.
