Eastern Line

History

The correct name for the company is the Eastern Shipping Company. It was based in Bombay and became a subsidiary of Scindia Line in 1941.

In 1954 the company was taken over by the Indian Government to form the nucleus of a national fleet.

In 1961 the Eastern Shipping Corporation and the Western Shipping Corporation, which operated from the same Bombay address, amalgamated to form the Shipping Corporation of India, which remains India’s national flag carrier and is one of the biggest shipping companies in the world.
