History

The original company was set up by Alan Gow in 1867. He started with a single sailing ship supporting trade between Glasgow, Liverpool and Chile following the Cape Horn route. When the second ship was purchased a naming standard of using Glen as the first part of the name was established. Shortly after the Suez Canal opened the company decided to change tack and take part in the China tea trade using steam ships. This started operating 1870 and James McGregor was put in charge of the company's steamship activities. The trade with south America was discontinued. By 1880 had become the senior partner and the company became McGregor, Gow & Company but it was still promoted as the Glen Line.

Glen Line Ltd was formed in 1910 and acquired by Elder, Dempster and Co. in 1911 and finally amalgamated with the Shire Line in 1920. Elder Dempster and Co was owned by Royal Mail and the collapse of the empire of Lord Kylsant led to Glen Line being taken over by Alfred Holt and Co. (Blue Funnel Line).

In 1972 the name of the owning company changed to Ocean Transport & Trading Co. and in 1974 joined forces with Ben Line to operate Ben-Ocean Services.

Glen Line ceased to own ships in 1978, and the Ocean Transport and Trading Co. was purchased by P & O, which sold the Glen Line assets to the Cornwall company Curnow Shipping Limited.
