History

This was a Swedish company and unfortunately for the English researchers of this material, most references to it on the Internet are in Swedish.

The company was set up by the Gorthon family in Sweden in 1915. Llyods has a reference to a company created in 1921 and known as Gorthons Rederi A/B. (Rederi is apparently Swedish for shipping company).

After WW2 they initially showed the fleet under separate headings for O. Sten Gorthon and Stig. Gorthon operating through subsidiaries.

The company was involved in the transportation of forest products and tankers in the 1970s and sold their last bulk transport vessel in 1978. Eight new vessels specially developed for forest product transportation were delivered between 1975 and 1979. Two RoRo vessels were delivered for transatlantic services in 1984.

The company was acquired by Bilspedition in 1989 and by B & N in 1990. Further vessels were delivered for forest products in 1993 and three others taken over from Transforest in 1995.

Gorthon was launched as a public company in 1997 and listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. In 2004 Gorthon-B & N Transatlantic is formed and in 2005 B & N Nordsjöfrakt AB and Gorthon Lines AB merged and the joint Parent Company takes the name Rederi AB Transatlantic.
