History

This company originated in 1871 as the Hamburg-Südamerikanische Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft, [Hamburg South American Steam Packet Co.] changing in 1952 to its current name of Hamburg-Südamerikanische Dampfschiffahrts-Ges.

The Dr. August Oetker company obtained an interest in Hamburg South America in 1934 and took control of the company in 1952. In 1973 it amalgamated with Dr. August Oetker Schiffahrts und Beteiligungs GmbH but kept its name. Today the company is a subsidiary of Rudolf A. Oetker with most of its fleet now listed under the associate Columbus Shipmanagement GmbH.

The naming convention appears to be to start all ships names with Cap.

Service History Information Change of name to San Diego and owner to Hansamerica SA 1982, change of name to Sangria and owner to Multitrade Sg Inc 1986, change of name to Cap San Diego and owner to The City of Hamburg 1986.

Cap San Diego is now owned by the Hamburg Admiralty Foundation which has put her into good order. She serves as a museum with tours of the ship, has an on-board bistro and part of the vessel is used for events, celebrations, meetings etc. It is possible to stay overnight in one of the preserved cabins.

Note: In December 2018 I was contacted by Helmut Brücker who kindly told me about the current status of Cap San Diego and also advised that each year trips are arranged on the Elbe, through the Kiel Canal, into the Baltic Sea and back to Hamburg. More details about opening hours and the museum ship can be found on the Cap San Diego website HERE.
