History

The company Leif Höegh & Co (LHC) was started up by Leif Høegh in 1927. He had been educated in political economist but at the age of 20 got a job in shipping and worked in USA and Norway before starting the company at the age of 31. He became an entrepreneur in oil transportation and earned his fortune from tankers on long-term charter-parties, later turning to liner shipping in order to spread his financial exposure.

By the outbreak of WW2 LHC managed a fleet of 13 ships. The company entered liner shipping activities with the Java Pacific Line and from 1948 operated the West Africa Service which was sold in 1990.

From the 1960s the company diversified into combined oil/bulk/ore carriers, specialised forest product carriers and Ro/Ro car carriers. In 1970 LHC started a joint venture with Ugland as Höegh-Ugland Auto Liners (HUAL). LHC took over the whole of HUAL in 2000 and renamed the company Höegh Autoliners. It is one of the world's largest operators in the Ro/Ro and vehicle transportation segment.

Höegh pioneered the transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and five LNG carriers in part or in whole.
